Notion's new App, new CTO and maybe new Strategy
Plus Quantum Metric crossed $100M ARR milestone
Hey, welcome my friends, today’s trending signal is Notion:
It is now estimated at $576M ARR.
After acquiring the calendar app Cron in June 2022, Notion today finally launched a new app Notion Calendar. It is a surprise to me that it is a standalone app, rather than an integration to Notion.
Raphael Schaad, founder of Cron and now head of Notion Calendar announced in the Notion blog:
Notion Calendar is a better way to manage, organize, and prioritize your time across work and life.
Our vision is to bring the time layer eventually into all aspects of Notion (notes, projects, tasks), so that you have a unified way to manage all the things competing for your time.
Most features of the Notion Calendar are derived from Cron, and some are very impressive, such as:
Connect multiple accounts to manage personal + work events, and auto-block times to avoid conflicts.
Attach and create Notion pages from Notion Calendar.
See your schedule, join meetings, and open attachments from your computer’s menu bar.
Built-in scheduling, so you can easily share your availability and allow others to book time
And… sync Notion databases to view (and update) deadlines and timelines alongside other events in Notion Calendar.
It is now deeply integrated into Noiton. What I love best is the built-in scheduling feature, it can use Notion Calendar as a replacement for a scheduling service like Calendly, you simply click on “share availability” and drag and drop the times you want to make available for this meeting in your calendar.
Why Notion Calendar a standalone app, maybe a repost tweet from CEO Ivan Zhao from an eng manager tells something different:
Calendar's out of the bag! helping transform Notion into a "multi-app" company has been an incredibly fun journey. so proud of the team for all the hard work & attention to detail that went into this launch! it's about time.
What’s more, cofounder and COO Akshay Kothari recently said:
Notion will be a much different company, by the end of this year. I couldn't be more excited about all the things we'll launch in 2024.
Does that mean Notion will have a different strategy to be a multi-app rather than all-in-one? Maybe. However, Notion’s new CTO can be a big signal.
Just a month ago, Notion welcomed its new CTO Fuzzy Khosrowshahi:
Fuzzy was the creator of Google Sheets — he had the idea to convert spreadsheets into a web app while working in the finance industry. He then spent 15 years at Google leading a team across Google Workspace (including Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides). And most recently, he served as the SVP of Product Engineering at Slack.
Now Notion is a $10B company, have an ARR estimated at $576M( Based on its 4M paid users, if an average $12 per month) .
It is still growing very fast, from VCs at Index, Sequoia and Coatue:
The best performing company in their portfolio is Notion.
A new app, new CTO, maybe a new strategy in the future, I guess.
