Investor Elad Gil wrote an interesting essay titled Index Companies 5 years ago, which he defined as:

Index companies often take a cut of every transaction in their space, or are a piece of infrastructure everyone in the market needs. For example, it is a hard to launch something into space in the West without using SpaceX. These companies may be ways to participate in the market broadly without having to worry about how wins in it.

Some example index companies are:

  • Anduril - index defense

  • Coinbase - index crypto

  • NVIDIA - index AI

  • Stripe - index e-commerce

  • SpaceX - index space

Take the example of Stripe, it is:

For many years Stripe effectively acted as an index of startups in online commerce. One can argue Stripe is now a proxy for the underlying global online economy. Buying Stripe means buying an important subset of the internet.

As the index company in Defense, Anduril is growing rocket. It is currently in discussions to secure up to $2.5 billion in funding with a valuation of $28 billion. While its revenue has seen impressive growth, reportedly doubling to around $1 billion last year.

Elad said Anduril is in a magic moment that only a handful of generational companies ever see. Everything accelerates / you become the center of the universe for a domain. You get the best people. You build the best products. You get the biggest opportunity to change the world.
